"Haunted"

In the rustling silence of the autumn night, beneath a harvest moon, she waits, certain that he will come.

It has been many years since he first brought her to life, yet she recalls the way he'd planned her every detail: designing, visualizing, making his desires known as she took shape. She relives with pleasure his careful attentions, his loving caresses.

He will come.

She knows that time has taken its toll. In the darkness now she senses the scurrying of small creatures along mildew-stained corridors, the creak of half-open doors as night winds moan through shattered panes. She feels the passage of seasons in the burrowing of patient insects, the moldering of damp wood, the peeling of paint, the drip, drip, drip of immeasurable time.

And still she is certain he will come.

"How long has it been?"

The tattered flag still flies -- now softly waving, then still as death. "Why has he deserted me?" she wonders. "Where has he gone? We were lovers. We were meant to be forever as one."

She recalls the five wondrous years he lived within her walls... the nights he would visit her many rooms, caressing a silken-finished door, intricate Gothic cabinetry along a stairway, reveling in every touch, savoring the elusive perfume of fine woods and finishes... and then one day he was gone.

The neighbors like her not at all, deriding her as the "the funeral home on the hill." They say she must be haunted. She doesn't care.

"Yes, I am haunted," she thinks, now sensing a new and different draft stirring the silent dust.

"Is that really you, my love?"

He is here.

"Haunted" was commissioned by Mark T., who lovingly designed and built this house and did in fact live within her walls for just five years before reluctantly parting with her. He has never really forgotten his house, his love. He asked me to envision her, in some future autumn, as a ghost that he himself perhaps might haunt, as indeed he is haunted by her.

Mark has generously permitted me to share his love, his painting, and his vision, with you.

It may haunt you as well.
